This pathway course will help you navigate the UK doctoral degree application and enrolment process. It will give you an idea of what to expect on a doctoral degree at the University of Nottingham, and what will be expected of you as a doctoral student. You’ll also get the chance to adjust to studying in the UK in a supportive environment, and can get used to British life and culture.

You will develop various transferable academic and research skills, helping you become an independent, self-directed learner. You’ll be supported throughout the programme to develop knowledge of the doctoral selection and research process, and to build a range of key skills to successfully apply to study a degree.

What content is covered on the course?

The Pre-Doctorate course consists of 3 main modules, all designed to help you transition into your intended doctoral degree. The Pre-Doctorate is a 1 term course, taught at the International College by expert tutors who knows the UK’s doctorate-level education system extremely well.

The main programme (1 term) runs for 12 weeks, and includes the following 3 core modules:

  • Research Proposal Design: develop a research topic, understand data collection methods and plan a viable proposal for your doctorate.
  • The Doctoral Candidate: explore the key skills required for doctoral study, learn what makes a successful application and consider your future career.
  • Academic Skills and Communication: become familiar with key terminology, develop your written and spoken critical thinking and understand your subject specialism.

Course details

English requirement: minimum IELTS 6.0 in all skills

Academic requirement: 1st or high 2.1 (or international equivalent), or merit or above at master’s level in a relevant Engineering-related subject

Course length: 12 weeks (1 term)

Tuition fees: £5,000
