The fact that Queen Mary is located in East London does open several academic and professional opportunities for me, and I believe that the University gives me the necessary guidance to pursue my goals.

  • Bruce Dickinson (UK)

    Graduated from Queen Mary

    Earned a bachelor’s in History in 1979.

    Lifetime achievements

    A British singer in pioneering heavy metal band Iron Maiden, whose albums have sold over 100 million copies worldwide. Dickinson has also had a successful career as a commercial pilot, and competed in fencing internationally.

  • Davidson Nicol (Sierra Leone)

    Graduated from Queen Mary

    Earned a medical degree in 1959.

    Lifetime achievements

    A celebrated Sierra Leonean academic, diplomat, physician and writer. Nicol worked as an academic, the Permanent Representative of Sierra Leone to the United Nations, and as Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations. He was also the first black African to graduate from the University of Cambridge with First Class Honours.

  • Florence Mahoney (Gambia)

    Graduated from Queen Mary

    Earned a bachelor’s in History in 1951.

    Lifetime achievements

    A Gambian author and academic, who has taught in both Gambia and the United States. She was the first Gambian woman to obtain a PhD.

  • Frank Gibbs Torto (Ghana)

    Graduated from Queen Mary

    Earned a PhD in Chemistry in 1947.

    Lifetime achievements

    A Ghanaian chemist and founding member of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences. Torto has worked as a scientific consultant for the United Nations, and had a long career in academia.

  • Guðni Th. Jóhannesson (Iceland)

    Graduated from Queen Mary

    Earned a PhD in History in 2003.

    Lifetime achievements

    An Icelandic politician and the sixth President of Iceland. An eager historian, Jóhannesson has written about modern history, and has translated a number of Stephen King novels into Icelandic.

  • Kanagasabapathy J. Sripavan (Sri Lanka)

    Graduated from Queen Mary

    Earned a master’s in 1994.

    Lifetime achievements

    A Sri Lankan lawyer and judge, and the 44th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka. Sripavan had a long career in the Sri Lankan legal system, and served on the Supreme Court for 7 years before becoming Chief Justice.

  • Katia Elizarova (Russia)

    Graduated from Queen Mary

    Earned a bachelor’s in Law in 2009.

    Lifetime achievements

    A Russian model and actress. She has worked with top brands such as Chanel, Versace, Calvin Klein, Valentino and Swarovski, and has spoken at the Oxford Union about modelling.

  • Roger Tan (Malaysia)

    Graduated from Queen Mary

    Earned a bachelor’s in Law.

    Lifetime achievements

    A successful Malaysian lawyer, with a long career in the commercial, public and social spheres. His work includes acting pro bono in a case helping orphanages recover land.

  • Tom Maibaum (Hungary)

    Graduated from Queen Mary

    Earned a PhD in Computer Science in 1974.

    Lifetime achievements

    A Hungarian computer scientist who has held a number of academic posts at universities in the UK and Canada. He has carried out widely respected research in the area of software engineering.
