Pre-Sessional English for a Bournemouth University degree

Improve your English language level and gain valuable skills and knowledge ahead of your degree at Bournemouth University (BU), with a Pre-Sessional English (PSE) course.

All of our PSE courses are taught at the Bournemouth University International College, located on the University campus.

Why might I need a PSE course?

Bournemouth University offers a number of Pre-Sessional English (PSE) and Pre-Sessional courses for students with an offer to study a degree.

If you have received a conditional offer where you meet the academic entry requirements but need to raise your English language level, a PSE course will help you reach the required standard. If you have an unconditional offer, a Pre-Sessional course will allow you to build on your research and study skills, and adapt to life in the UK.

There are 4 types of Pre-Sessional courses available depending on whether you have received a conditional or unconditional offer to study at BU.

Available courses for conditional offer holders

  • Pre-Sessional English (Fast Track)

    Pre-Sessional English (Fast Track) can help you improve your English language skills to meet degree entry requirements of IELTS 6.0, with at least 5.5 in all skills.

    • Course duration: 6 to 12 weeks
    • English requirements: minimum IELTS 5.0
      with at least 4.5 in all skills

    • Exam Skills Practice
    • Grammar and Sentence Structure
    • Language for Study
    • Vocabulary and Pronunciation


  • Pre-Sessional English with Study Skills

    The Pre-Sessional English with Study Skills option provides all-round university preparation if you have more time to improve your English.

    • Course duration: 5 to 39 weeks
    • English requirements: minimum IELTS 4.0
      in all skills

     
    Modules:

    • Language for Study
    • Personal Development Project
    • Progressions Project (related to your degree)
    • Skills for Study


Available courses for unconditional offer holders

  • Bachelor’s Enhancement Programme

    The Bachelor’s Enhancement Programme is designed to not only improve your academic skills and English language level; it will also introduce you to living and studying in the UK. It is designed for students who hold an unconditional offer, but would like to do some extra preparation before their degree.

    • Course duration: 3 to 6 weeks
    • English requirements: meeting degree

    • Life in the UK
    • Personal Development and Progression Project
    • Skills for Study


  • Master’s Enhancement Programme

    The Master’s Enhancement Programme is designed to not only improve your academic skills and English language level; it will also introduce you to living and studying in the UK. It is designed for students who hold an unconditional offer, but would like to do some extra preparation before their degree.

    • Course duration: 3 to 6 weeks
    • English requirements: meeting degree

    • Personal Development and Progression Project
    • Skills for Postgraduate Study
    • UK Culture and University Life

Progressing to Bournemouth University

When you successfully complete your programme, providing you meet the entry requirements for your degree, you’re guaranteed progression to Bournemouth University.

If you hold an unconditional offer for a BU degree, you will be expected to complete all the assessments on your Enhancement Programme, but the results of these assessments will not affect your university offer.
